Our Love Story

It all started, as many modern love stories do, with a swipe. Fresh off completing her post-graduate training in French cuisine at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, Isabel had just returned to Houston and was preparing to begin her career in marketing. With a bit of curiosity and a little optimism, she downloaded a dating app. At the same time, Jack had just finished his 2L summer as a Summer Associate and found himself with a rare stretch of free time before his final year of law school. On a similar whim—and perhaps a bit of good timing—he decided to give the dating app world a try too. Fate—and a very good algorithm—stepped in. They matched. True to form, Jack suggested a first date at Le Jardinier, Houston's first Michelin-starred restaurant—a bold move. Charmed by the gesture but preferring something a little more relaxed, Isabel suggested a different setting. They landed on a Houston favorite: The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation. What began as a 7:00 PM reservation turned into four hours of conversation, laughter, and getting to know one another. They were the last table to leave, and from the moment they met, the connection felt easy and genuine. The next day, Isabel called Jack to tell him how much she'd enjoyed the evening. A second date quickly followed — a movie night. When Jack asked her favorite film, Isabel, an unapologetic lover of musicals, didn't hesitate: La La Land. Jack agreed. Yet somehow, when she arrived, American Psycho was playing instead. To this day, no one is entirely sure how that happened — but she stayed, and it's become one of their favorite inside jokes. Conversation came easily. Laughter came naturally. And before long, they made it official. As their relationship grew, so did the rhythm of their daily lives together—long phone calls that stretched late into the night, casual dinners, weekends spent exploring Houston and Austin, trying new restaurants, cooking together, and spending time with friends. What started as excitement grew into something steady and real: the comfort of knowing they could always count on each other. Along the way, they discovered a meaningful family connection: Isabel’s great-aunt and great-uncle had once been next-door neighbors and close friends with Jack’s grandparents for many years. Their families’ paths had crossed long before they did. It was a detail that felt too meaningful to ignore. It felt bashert—Hebrew for 'meant to be.' A little over a year later, they were ready for the next step. The day before Thanksgiving, what Isabel thought was a family lunch at Brennan’s turned into the surprise of a lifetime. Her sisters instead brought her to the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, where Jack was waiting. In a quiet, peaceful moment in the gardens, Jack (shaking with nerves) got down on one knee and asked Isabel to marry him. She, of course, said yes. They celebrated afterward at The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation—the same place as their first date—surrounded by close friends and family. What began as a simple swipe became something neither of them set out to find but both are endlessly grateful they did: a partner, a best friend, and a love story they can’t wait to continue.

The Eastern Glades is one of our favorite peaceful spots in the city. We’ve grabbed coffee and walked the trails many weekend mornings. We consider it one of Houston’s hidden gems.
